Color Palettes: Historic Silkscreen Posters, "Discover Puerto Rico"

"Discover Puerto Rico" Poster. Library of Congress Control No. 98518614. Artist: Frank S. Nicholson. Sponsor: Federal Art Project. Created between 1936-1940.

Today, we can create visual art with millions of colors but earlier artists had less colors to work with so they knew how to do more, within those limitations. Today kicks off a new color palette series of study for me, looking at poster art from the Federal Art Project during the Depression and seeing how artists played with color using minimal palettes.

In some areas of Mr. Nicholson's poster, the colors are in a harmonious family of greens or blues. In other sections, he plays with color vibrations like within the Palm tree trunk as well as the color relationships that surround the trees. Enjoy!
