Corn Flower Watercolor and Pencil

Corn Flower Watercolor and Pencil by Susan Lally-Chiu

Cornflowers or Bachelor Buttons (Centaurea cyanus). I see these flowers growing wild along the roadsides in the northwest. Most corn flowers come from Europe but some are native to the Americas. The reason it got the name “Bachelor Button” is that the flower was worn by young men looking for love. It’s an edible flower and it can dried for use in teas. The bluish purple color is so strong you can make homemade dyes from it too.

I just love the different colors and textures.
